An analysis of 2 large case series conducted in Japan (involving 635,676 individuals aged 30–74 years) identified 15,929 deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) and 8,074 deaths from CHD associated with oral steroid use.3 The average number of years of oral steroid use for both studies was 3.2 years.3–7 Of the 15,929 deaths from CHD from the two large case series, 6,844 (40%) occurred while the cases were using oral steroids. In the Japanese population study, the incidence of heart disease increased with increasing amount of oral steroid use, side effects of steroids at 36 weeks.3 This study is the first to show an increased risk of heart disease associated with oral steroid use, side effects of steroids at 36 weeks. However, the findings from the Japanese study, in which use of oral steroid was based on a self-report scale, were less consistent. The number of cases on the self-report scale was low, and the researchers did not perform a detailed history for every individual who was a case, steroids for pain relief.3 In the Japanese data analysis, we conducted a case–control study to examine whether any of the risk factors for heart disease in a population were also associated with oral steroid use in the population in which risk factors were based on medical records, steroids for pain relief.
